A short term rental countertop has two jobs that pull against each other. It has to photograph well enough to win the booking, and it has to survive guests who have no investment in keeping it nice. Engineered quartz is the workhorse. It is non porous, so the wine nobody wiped up on Saturday night has not soaked in by Sunday. It never needs sealing, which matters because a guest will certainly never seal anything and a cleaner has no reason to. It resists the scratching that comes from someone cutting directly on the counter, which happens in every rental eventually.

A light quartz with visible movement photographs particularly well in the small kitchens common in Asheville rental conversions, because the pattern gives the camera something to hold onto where a flat color reads as cheap.

The Heat Problem

Quartz has one real weakness and guests find it. The resin binder softens under a pan straight off the burner, and the mark is permanent. We leave trivets in every rental we finish and suggest owners put a small note in the house manual. It costs nothing and it prevents the single most common damage claim we see.
